Stocks pared earlier declines and oil prices pulled back from highs after a report that Iran is drafting a protocol with Oman to oversee traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
The S&P 500 was down nearly 0.2% after dropping more than 1.5% earlier in the session. The Nasdaq 100 fell 0.3%, also recovering from a sharper loss. West Texas Intermediate was up 11% near $111 per barrel after climbing to almost $114 earlier in the session.
