UBS: Japanese Intervention Caps USD/JPY but Does Not Reverse Yen Weakness - FJElite

Japan’s intervention has limited near-term upside in USD/JPY, but it has not changed the underlying drivers of yen weakness. The absence of a final warning makes future intervention less predictable and potentially more effective at discouraging speculative positioning.

Japan’s policy mix is still unlikely to produce sustained yen strength, with the BoJ expected to normalise gradually and real rates remaining negative. The US side remains the main swing factor. USD/JPY forecasts have been raised to 162 for September 2026, 160 for December, 158 for March 2027 and 158 for June 2027, with the outlook dependent on incoming US data and whether the Fed can maintain policy credibility into September.
